shapiro's delicatessen

Shapiro's Delicatessen is an Indianapolis landmark that has been serving up the motor city's best corned beef and pastrami since 1905. Shapiro's started with humble beginnings as a tiny grocery/deli and has evolved into the Midwest's go-to for comfort food kosher classics such as matzo ball and chicken noodle soups, Swiss steak, baked chicken, meat loaf, macaroni and cheese, and incredibly indulgent pies, cakes, and pastries. The portion sizes are enormous and the staff friendly. I would argue that Shapiro's makes the best mac and cheese I have ever tasted. They bake it cruncy perfection on top with creamy cheese below. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it. If you haven't had the opportunity to hit up this local hot spot, I highly recommend you add it to your bucket list. You won't regret it. Visit their website for more menu offerings.

divine #2 bbq

Divine BBQ is a family owned down and dirty BBQ joint on the west side of Indianapolis. They offer consistantly delicous food in large portion sizes on the cheap! My personal fave is the Porky Mac. For those unfamilar with the lingo, it is pulled pork topped with an equal portion of mac and cheese. So simple but so delicious! They offer all of your standard BBQ joint choices pulled pork, pulled chicken, hot links, turkey legs, rib slabs and rib tips. These yummy carnivorous main dishes are paired with comfort food classics such as mac and cheese, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw and mixed greens. The majority of their business is carry out and catering. The atmosphere and decor is humble but the service is friendly and you never know who might pop in.  Adam Sandler stopped by when he was in town for the Super Bowl. Visit their website to plan your outing.

the tamale place

Are you a Food Network buff wanting to check out a local spot that was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives? Then The Tamale Place is a great place to start. The Tamale Place has been broadening the city's horizons on authentic Mexican food since 2003. All tamales, chips, tortilla shells and salsa are made fresh in house daily. The only non-authentic thing about their tamales is the size. These half-pound whoppers are filled with delicious meat and fresh sauces. But you better get there early because these things go quick! They offer a variety of sauces and meat choices along with vegetarian options. In addition to the enormous tamales, they are serving up nachos, tacos and tortas, all in huge portions. I am a sucker for their mild chicken verde nachos. The large size will feed 4 people, no joke. They are topped with loads of queso, black beans and shredded iceberg. My advice, add a side of salsa, you won't be sorry. It's uber fresh and soooo tasty! Here's their link.

bru burger bar

Bru Burger Bar is one of the newest additions to Indy's eclectic Mass Ave shopping and dining district.  Bru is the CRG restaurant family's ode to the gourmet American burger.  Their menu boasts 17 different delicious burgers to choose from.  They also offer some tasty salads and non-burger sandwiches to satisfy everyone.  You can't go wrong with their appetizers either.  I personally recommend the Pabst Blue Ribbon beer battered onion rings served with their house-made ketchup.  As for my burger suggestions, no matter what you choose, you won't be disappointed.  Every burger I have tried has been a brilliant success.  If you have never tried a burger with egg on it, Bru is the place to take the leap with their The End burger.  What sets Bru apart from other burger joints is their excellent craft beer selections to pair with their top notch burgers.  They offer many Midwest brewed choices so drink local!  To peruse their delicious concoctions, visit their website.

zest! exciting food creations

Zest! Exciting Food Creations is a fun and funky spot on East 54th Street in Broad Ripple, Indiana.  For those Food Network junkies out there, Zest! was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.  Their menu sports what their chef, Valerie Vanderpool, deems "downhome goes uptown."  It is her way of taking downhome comfort food classics and dialing up the sophistication level.  On my last visit, I indulged in Zest!'s Wild Hibiscus Mimosa.  To say it was yummy is an understatement.  I paired it with their meatloaf sandwich and macaroni and cheese.  The sandwich is topped with white cheddar and sun-dried tomato marmalade on toasted sourdough.  Tom argues that their mac 'n cheese is the best in the city.  I still contend that Shapiro's is the best but Zest!'s is a very close second.  Zest! has extended their hours and are now open for dinner.  Check out their menu and hours here.

b's po boy

B's Po Boy is an offbeat tribute to Norleans' located in the up and coming Fountain Square area.  If you are unfamiliar with the po boy sandwich concept, it is a submarine sandwich that originates in Louisiana that consists of meat, usually fried seafood or roast beef and is served on a baguette that is has a crisp crust and fluffy center.  They are delish!  Crawl fish or shrimp is definitely a great place to start if you are trying a po boy for the first time.  Finding a legit po boy sandwich in Indianapolis is no small feat so when we stumbled upon B's, we were pleasantly surprised.  B's also boasts some tasty gumbo for those who are looking for the full on New Orleans experience.  If you aren't quite willing to commit to the Louisiana flavors just yet, B's offers a large variety of po boy fillings, including:  BBQ pulled pork, chipped roast beef, creole chicken salad, spicy sausage patty, Andouille sausage, ground beef patty, ham, vegetarian, fried shrimp, BBQ shrimp, fried oyster or blackened catfish.  The atmosphere is casual and eclectic.  Its cozy in the winter but they have an awesome outdoor area, complete with bocce ball, when it's sunny out.  Check out their website for more info!
